Specific FunctionCatalyzes the oxidation of guanosine diphospho-D-mannose (GDP-D-mannose) to GDP-D-mannuronic acid, a precursor for alginate polymerization. The alginate layer causes a mucoid phenotype and provides a protective barrier against host immune defenses and antibiotics.
